I will fight for academic self-governance, says newly inaugurated Dean Boháč

The Rector of Charles University, Professor Jiří Zima, officially opened the second term of office of the Dean of our Faculty, Professor Radim Boháč. The Academic Senate also elected its President, Associate Professor Marek Antoš, and two Vice-Presidents, Klára Hurychová and Pavel Linzer. The Senate then approved the new composition of the Dean’s Board, supporting all of the Dean’s nominations without exceptions.

“We have known each other for many years. He has been a great Dean, we have collaborated in the Rector's Board, and whenever Radim said something, it made sense. I have always found all of his insights and remarks really interesting and helpful. So, you will be in very capable hands,” said Rector Zima in his speech to open the inauguration ceremony during which Dean Boháč took an oath before the Rector.

“When I ran for office, I noted down three words for my speech: challenge, responsibility, and humbleness. It was a challenge to do it all again, even without an opposing candidate. It is a huge responsibility, that symbolic chain really weighs on your shoulders, and even if you take it off, it is still there. Allow me to thank to all of you for your support. I want to perform my duties with humbleness towards the office, the people, and the Faculty, but also beyond the Faculty. I do not want to sound pessimistic, but there are some hard times ahead of us, for a number of reasons. First, the completion of the Albertov Campus. Mr Rector, I promise I will assist you in resolving the matter, to find the money that is needed, so that it does not impact the Faculty negatively, and I will gladly collaborate with you. The second aspect goes beyond the Faculty.  An amendment to the Higher Education Act and academic self-governance are being discussed. I want to promise here and now that I will fight for it will all my might, but the debate will be a difficult one. Given the proclamations made by our political representatives, we will have to put up a fight. So, I need your support to preserve academic self-governance,” Boháč said.
Before the inauguration ceremony itself, the Academic Senate of PF UK elected new management. The only candidate for President, Associate Professor Marek Antoš, received 17 votes in the secret ballot, with one person having abstained from the vote. The first candidate for Vice-President, Klára Hurychová received 16 votes, with two members having abstained from the vote. The other candidate, Pavel Linzer, received votes from 13 of the members present, with four members having abstained and one person having voted against his nomination.
The vote was followed by the speeches of the nominated members of the Dean’s Board, each of whom briefly introduced the priorities in their field. The nominations of all of the candidates were then approved in a secret ballot.
Challenges faced by new management

One of the most important tasks for the Faculty’s new management will be the preparation of the accreditation of the new five-year master’s programme of study of Law and Jurisprudence, which will start as of 2029/2030. The main person responsible at the level of the Dean’s Board will be Associate Professor Bohumil Havel as the accreditation coordinator. The process will involve the Faculty bodies, boards, and individual departments.

The new Vice-Dean for Science and Research Activities will be Jan Komárek who, in addition to his expertise, will bring experience from the University of Copenhagen. The newly established position of the junior research activities coordinator will be held by Associate Professor Pavel Ondřejek.
