“Digital Legal Studies: Computational Data Analysis”
Course number: HOPV0268
"In an era of ‘Big Data,’ the most effective lawyers will be those who can speak the language of both the law and the machine." This semester Faculty of Law offers a new course titled “Digital Legal Studies: Computational Data Analysis”. The course provides a practical introduction to using Python to examine legal and policy documents. Designed specifically for law students with no prior programming experience, the course uses instructor-provided notebooks to teach students how to load, clean, and structure data. Students will learn to transform complex legal texts into clear visualisations and rigorous, data-backed insights.
Beyond technical skills, the course emphasises the critical evaluation of AI’s role in the justice system. Students will learn to identify key data sources, modify existing code for original outputs, and assess the ethical risks associated with automated legal work. By bridging the gap between traditional research and computational analysis, students will gain a significant advantage in policy-making, litigation, and the evolving tech-legal sector
